چکیده

This article combines the vocabulary of semiotics and category theory to provide a formal analysis of information visualisation. It shows how familiar processes of information visualisation fit the semiotic frameworks of both Saussure and Peirce, and extends these structures using the tools of category theory to provide a general framework for understanding information visualisation in practice, including: relationships between systems, data collected from those systems, renderings of those data in the form of representations, the reading of those representations to create visualisations, and the use of those visualisations to create knowledge and understanding of the system under inspection. The resulting framework is validated by demonstrating how many familiar concepts used in visualisation arise naturally from it; and used to identify some less intuitive distinctions which are useful in comparing visualisation methods. Finally, some suggestions are made regarding further uses to which this framework might be put, particularly as regards the study of multiand cross-modal representations.

Category Theory as a Formal Mathematical Foundation for Model-Based Systems Engineering

In this paper, we introduce Category Theory as a formal foundation for model-based systems engineering. A generalised view of the system based on category theory is presented, where any system can be considered as a category. The objects of the category represent all the elements and components of the system and the arrows represent the relations between these components (objects). The relation...

Semiotic Aspects of Generalized Bases of Data

We have systems rich in information but poor in knowledge. The paper shall sketch a framework in which information and knowledge could be properly integrated. Our initial hypothesis is that passing from information to knowledge involves the elaboration of a well structured theory of semiotic units. The latter is codified by a three-fold structure: an expression, a content and an ontological com...

Semiotics in Visualisation

Digital visualisation is a way of representing data and information with the aid of digital means. It ranges from a simple form such as a graph or chart to a complex form like animated visualisations that allows user to interact with the underlying data through direct manipulation (Chen et al., 2008). The notion of digital visualisation engages human interpretation on information in order to ga...

A Formal Foundation of Systems Engineering

In this paper we discuss a formal foundation of systems engineering based on category theory. The main difference with other categorical approaches is the choice of the structure of the base category (symmetric monoidal or compact closed) which is, on the one hand, much better adapted to current modeling tools and languages (e.g. SysML), and on the other hand is canonically associated to a logi...

The meaning of place, A constant or changing quality? Lynch,Rapoport and Semiotics view points

The matter of meaning in place, is one of the main qualities of human life. People consciously or unconsciously looking for meanings in places. The importance of finding the meaning of place is that, Understanding the meaning will lead to “act” in place. Finding the place friendly, or finding it insecure will lead to act differently. Now the question is that, is the meaning of place, something ...
